Ironic Twist seeking irony, because sarcasm clashes with my outfit

Friday, August 12, 2005 :::

Friday: Mojitos at Bar Pilar with Ms. gl*mrocker and perhaps Mr. Information Leafblower and his out-of-town guest Mr. Coolfer. Then, The Opposite Sex CD release with openers Two if by Sea and Skydivers at the Black Cat w/ Ms. gl*mrocker. If I wasn't doing that, I'd be seeing a midnight show of The Aristocrats.

Two if by Sea - "100 Days" (MP3)

Saturday: I'll be in The B.C. doing the "please don't find anything seriously wrong with my car" dance, but if you're around and like Juliana Hatfield, be sure to stop by Revolution Records at 4:00 p.m. for a free in-store performance and signing. When I get back to D.C., it's time to hear all about Ms. WeirdCurves' Scandinavian adventures.

Sunday: I think I may have made plans, but I don't know what they are...

I don't know anything about the U.K. band Texas (allmusic overview here), but over at Life Of A Spuckle it was mentioned that their song "Getaway" had obvious similarities to ABBA's "Honey Honey." I wanted to check this out for myself, but couldn't find the Texas song. When I commented that the song wasn't availble for sampling on iTunes in the U.S. like it is in the U.K., Mr. Spuckle went ahead and found an MP3.

I'm not sure how long the song will be available, but here it is for now:

Texas - "Getaway" (MP3)

Whether or not you fault the band for ripping off ABBA, it's a catchy little pop song for fans of ABBA, Kylie and other disco new and old.

And speaking of Kylie, I'm enjoying the Kylie-like Sara Jorge song over at Fluxblog.

Yahoo! News headline: "Fidel Castro to turn 79 with no plans to retire"

Silly Yahoo! News, I'm pretty sure you don't retire from being a dictator.

Someone once told me that no one cares when I report that some Swedish band pretty much no one else knows about changed their name. But I think you should care, because Le Sport (formerly Eurospot and Eurosport) are good. No, they haven't changed their name again, but they do have a new URL. And a new song:

Le Sport - "Shaking a lot" (MP3)

In even better news, although the band's debut EP sold out before I had a chance to order it, they are releasing a second EP through Songs I wish I had written, under the band's new name and with remastered songs and bonus remixes. From Songs I wish I had written:

It's fabulous, it's revolutionary, it's beautiful, it's euro-indie-disco-pop, it's an EP and it's here!

On Wednesday the 31st of August the Le Sport EP Tell no one about tonight will be released on the Songs I wish I had written label. We are happy to announce that the EP will be available thru every record shop in Sweden via Border Music Distribution.

The EP contains five songs - three remastered tracks that are known from before and two brand new remixes.

Thanks to swedesplease for the heads up.

The blogger formerly known as DCSOB sent me a very exciting text message last night:

"There's a Swedish diner [here in Chicago] with a monthly ABBA brunch."

I immediately replied to tell him that I'm going to plan my autumn visit to Chicago around this event, and he told me to look for information on the "Ann Sather cafe in Wicker Park." So I did. It's called Milwaukee Cafe, and the bruch takes place the first Sunday of every month, although I'm guessing they only do the Mama Mia ticket giveaways when the show's in town. I also found some info on the first such event at Chicagoist. I disagree with the -ist take on things -- brunch and disco sound like a great combination.

Now I'm looking forward to my trip even more that I was before! Although, I'm not so sure what's so Swedish about Ann Sather's breakfast and lunch menus. I'll have to check with Ms. WeirdCurves, who returns from Scandinavia today.

Today is the kind of day that mercilessly combines "will this day ever end?" with "I have way too much work!" and "I could really go for a nap right about now."

Luckily, Ms. gl*mrocker sent me this pretty picture to cheer me up:

I haven't seen this posted/listed anywhere yet, so I have no idea when tickets go on sale, but mark your calendars for Rufus Wainwright w/ OK Go at the 9:30 Club on October 31.

Too bad the new Ramones box set is upwards of $60, since the packaging/artwork sounds really cool... If I didn't already have a ton of Ramones CDs, I'd consider it. Okay, so I am considering it, because aside from 85 songs, it comes with a 52-page comic book/graphic novel and a DVD with videos and rare footage.

Update: Amazon has it for $51.99, plus free shipping. Damn you, temptation.

Update Part Deux: To clarify, I am very tempted to get it, but have not given in just yet.
